                    "第二次世界大戦末期の１９４５（昭和２０）年、陸軍が空襲と本土決戦に備え、八幡山公園内に建設を進めていたのがこの特殊地下壕である。建設は６月中旬からはじまり、終戦までの約２ヶ月間で、出入り口１１ヶ所、総延長７２１ｍにおよぶ横穴を掘り上げた。完成する前に終戦となり、実際に使用されることはなかったが、戦争の悲惨さと平和の大切さを語り継ぐものとして、現在もひっそりとその姿をとどめている。"
