                    "戸田忠恕は、１８５６（安政３）年１０歳で家督を継ぎ、宇都宮藩主となったが、幕末維新にあたって、山陵修復や戊辰戦争に力を尽くし、１８６８（慶応４）年５月、わずか２２歳で没した。この碑は、１８９７（明治３０）年従三位が贈られた後、翌31年に旧藩士や有志が、忠恕の功績を後世に伝えるため建てたもので、その波乱に富んだ生涯が、漢文体で碑全面に刻まれている。"
