                    "蒲生君平は、高山彦九郎（たかやまひこくろう）・林子平（はやししへい）とともに優れた人を表す「寛政の三奇人」の１人といわれ、１７６８（明和５）年に旧新石町に生まれた。歴代天皇の御陵を調査した『山陵志（さんりょうし）』を著し修復の必要性を説き、また、朝廷の官職についてまとめた『職官志』の著者として有名である。この碑は、蒲生君平の著書や行いが明治維新に大きな功績があったとして、明治天皇の「君平のひととなりはまことに立派であるから、これを広く天下に表して庶民に知らせるように」との勅命により、藩知事戸田忠友が奉行として、宇都宮の入り口であるこの地に建てたものである。内容は「この地が蒲生君平の里である」というもの。君平は、１８１３（文化１０）年に４６歳で没した。【明治時代】"
