                    "この絵巻は１８４７（弘化４）年に描かれ、所蔵者の家に『日光山大明神御祭礼絵巻』として伝えられている。「日光山大明神」とあるが、冒頭に「下野国河内郡宇都宮」とあり、その内容から見て、現在の宇都宮二荒山神社の祭礼に関するものである。順番に「三月十五日祭り」（花会祭）、「大湯之祭り・九月行列」（秋山祭・菊水祭）、「冬渡春渡神事夜祭」（おたりや）の行列の様子が描かれている。（本資料は菊水祭の部分を抜粋）<br />\n花会祭の行列には供僧が加わり、神仏習合であった時代に寺が行事の重要な役割を果たしていたことが分かる。秋山祭の付け祭りとして発展した菊水祭は、町内から出し物が繰り出され、絵巻には一番の馬場町から三十九番の小伝馬町まで、山車・屋台、練り物などが順番に並び、多くの参加者がこれに連なる。おたりやには現在でも奉納される田楽舞の踊り手の姿を見ることができる。町人たちが趣向を凝らした出し物や人々が密集した様子など、当時の賑わいを伝えている。"
